End of the Season

End of the Season
Maine's Mount Katahdin looms over a nameless lake.
September 30 marked the end of the fishing season over much of Maine. Fortunately I was able to head north over the weekend for one final chance at big brookies  in a remote pond....

This particular body of water shall remain nameless, although an angler would have to be pretty committed to even bother: The only way to get there is via a float plane or by driving 30 miles down a logging road and then hiking in four miles. A friend and I did the latter, but it was more like a six mile hike with a two-mile "short-cut penalty" tacked on  (note to self: just follow the damn trail next time).

So what was the payoff for all this effort: not much, unfortunately. Good weather, good water flows and good temps, but few fish. We saw some rises in the pond on Sunday but didn't get any hits. The only fish of the trip were a couple of small brookies taken from a trailside stream on our hike out. Given the time and effort invested getting there, it was kind of disappointing but only in terms of the fish.

The scenery was absolutely amazing, and watching the moon rise behind Mount Katahdin was one of the coolest things I've seen all year. I will be back.
