Great Salmon Year

A strongly worded editorial in the Western Star gave a sobering call for greater diligence in nabbing poachers, to allow these increased returns to benefit future runs. Worth reading
In Maine, the Penobscot has seen an amazing upsurge in numbers this year, and as of Monday of this week there had been just under 2,000 return. To check actual figures, go to:

Prince Edward Island has a long-standing problem of both nitrate pollution and pesticide kills. A new report on the nitrate problem has been released, and the government promises action. There was strong support on the island for this ¬ and it will help the many island rivers that have small Atlantic salmon populations. Report can be downloaded from this link.
Not least of the news is that the NB Government will support the renewal of the Petitcodiac towards removal of the gates with $20M ¬ despite the Federal decision not to be involved, and Canada's constitutional responsibility for these wild salmon and other migratory populations.
