The REAL culprit in the Yellowstone Lake trout disaster is not as the Park Service suggests, coffee pot planting, but the National Park Service itself.
In 1889 the Park Service planted Mac's from northern Lake Michigan into Lewis Lake (20 miles to the south of Yellowstone Lake) and in other lakes near the park.
Jack Dennis fly fishing guides, in nearby jackson Hole, take clients on fishing excursions to both lakes in the same day on a regular basis.
And they are surprised the fish found its way into Yellowstone Lake.

"Beginning in 1992, and again in 1994, 1996, 1998, 2002, and 2003, additional lots of Lewis Lake fish were stocked in the nearshore waters of western Lake Huron to begin quantifying the movement and dispersal patterns of hatchery fish. All movement fish were fin clipped (Ad) and implanted with CWT to enable detailed evaluation of recovered data. Tag recoveries will help biologists understand immigration and emigration between management zones and aid in the calculation of mortality rates and Harvest Limits (HLs)."
