Jay Hammond State Game Refuge?

A Bill to Create a Refuge in Bristol Bay Representative Gary Stevens (R-Kodiak) recently introduced SB 67, the Jay Hammond State Game Refuge Bill, which seeks to provide adequate protection of fish and wildlife habitat for 6 million acres of land in the Bristol Bay drainages. Recognizing the immense renewable resource value of Bristol Bay by designating a refuge would offer higher standards of protection in the watershed. SB 67 emphasizes “public use of fish and wildlife and their habitat, particularly subsistence, commercial, and recreational fishing, hunting, trapping, viewing and general public recreation in a high quality environment.” The bill would create a refuge of 5 million to 7 million acres of state land in the Bristol Bay headwaters. Bella Hammond, wife of the late former Governor Jay Hammond, visited the State capitol this winter to promote the creation of a refuge in Bristol Bay. She told the Anchorage Daily News, “I think Jay would first and foremost think of protecting that area, mainly the fish and game.” (ADN 2/17/07). However, SB 67 is not yet slated for a committee hearing in the Alaska State Senate. The time is NOW to let Senator Stevens and the Alaska State House Resource Committee know that SB 67 is crucially important for the protection of Bristol Bay and must be heard! What You Can Do… You can help protect Bristol Bay today by writing/emailing/faxing members of the Alaska Senate Resource Committee including Senator Gary Stevens with your strong support for SB 67, the Jay Hammond State Game Refuge Bill. If you would like to testify in person or on the phone when SB 67 is heard in the House Resource Committee, now is the time to ask that your name be put on the list. Tell these legislators why protecting our fishery resources in the Bristol Bay watershed is important to you and the State.
