Heritage Forests

Thanks to everyone's great work this year, we have been
successful in building support for the Roadless Area
Conservation Act of 2007 in both the House and Senate. The House
version, led by Representatives Jay Inslee (D-WA), Christopher
Shays (R-CT), George Miller (D-CA), Mark Kirk (R-IL), Maurice
Hinchey (D-NY), and Jim Ramstad (R-MN), now enjoys almost 150
bipartisan cosponsors. The Senate version, led by Senators Maria
Cantwell (D-WA) and John Warner (R-VA) has 20 bipartisan

In an effort to continue to build on this support, we would like
to ask your help in contacting Members of Congress before they
go home to their districts for the holiday recess. Members of
Congress must be urged to support this vital conservation
measure that would permanently protect 58.5 million acres of
pristine forest lands in 39 states, including 9.3 million acres
of the Tongass National Forest in Alaska.

By the end of the year, the Bush administration is expected to
announce comment periods for two state specific federal rule
making processes -- one in Colorado and one in Idaho -- that
would weaken protections currently in place under the 2001
Roadless Rule. These roadless petitions threaten some our
nation's most treasured public lands and could set a dangerous
precedent for other states to follow. Your help is needed to
urge Members of Congress to permanently protect our nations'
last remaining roadless lands.

We would like to invite organizations and individuals around the
country to participate in a national Holiday Call in Day to
Support Roadless Area Protection on Thursday, December 13. The
message is to urge Members of Congress to become cosponsors of
the Roadless Area Conservation Act of 2007.

Ask Your Member of Congress to Give a Gift of Roadless
