Gulf of Mexico gag grouper fishing moratorium starts Jan. 1

Further restrictions expected in 2011

Anglers will be prohibited from fishing for Gulf of Mexico gag grouper for five months starting Saturday. The gag population has plummeted and the Jan. 1 moratorium is the first step toward helping the species recover. Long-term measures, which would severely reduce future gag fishing from current allowable levels, are expected to be approved by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council in mid-2011.

Policy experts at the Pew Environment Group are available this week to talk about these plans.
