New Associate Publisher for Fly Rod & Reel Magazine
Down East Enterprise, Inc. announced today that company veteran Jim Butler had been appointed associate publisher of Down East’s fly-fishing title, Fly Rod & Reel. Butler spent nearly 15 years on the magazine’s editorial staff, serving ultimately as FR&R’s editor-in-chief and overseeing a long and successful period of growth. He has been FR&R’s editorial director, in an advisory capacity, for the past two years, and Down East’s vice president of operations for 10 (and he will retain those duties). Said Down East President and CEO Bob Fernald, “Jim loves the fly-fishing industry and the whole cast of characters passionate enough to believe they can make a living in the business. He has the insight, knowledge and skills that can only be provided by first-hand experience with the sport. We’re lucky that Jim is back guiding Fly Rod & Reel.” “This is an outstanding opportunity to get back into the market where I began my publishing career, and I’m thrilled about that,” said Butler. “There are few things that mean more to me than fly-fishing. This is also a challenging time to be in publishing, no matter the subject, and I’m looking forward to examining all the details of Fly Rod & Reel’s business, and helping determine where we take it from here. The magazine still offers what I think is the best editorial package in the market, attracting the most desirable readers, readers who spend money with advertisers. That won’t ever change.” Down East Enterprise is a multimedia company based in Rockport, Maine, devoted to celebrating “Maine at its Best.” Founded in 1954, the company’s flagship publication, Down East: The Magazine of Maine, has become synonymous with the state. Down East has also published a list of 800 book titles to date, and publishes Shooting Sportsman Magazine, the world’s largest magazine dedicated to wingshooting and fine guns; and Fly Rod & Reel, a quarterly devoted to the passion of fly-fishing.
