Worcester, Mass.--a Regional and National Embarrassment
I was hoping that the decision of 3 August by the First Circuit Court of Appeals would motivate Worcester to shut up and clean up. Instead it’s making noise about squandering even more taxpayer money by taking the case to the Supreme Court. That should give the justices a good laugh as they pitch it into the circular file. Worcester is a regional and national embarrassment, fouling Blackstone River communities all the way to Providence. If it had invested half the taxpayer money it has squandered in its failed and frivolous lawsuits against the EPA in an effort to duck its legal and moral obligations under the Clean Water Act, it would have more than paid for the modest upgrades in sewage treatment the law requires. For even more tax money it has ordered, controlled and paid for “studies” that provide it with absurdly inflated cost estimates. The law has finally caught up with Worcester; and Worcester needs to catch up with the rest of America.
