The Grinch who brought us Arbor Day Morton was an ecological illiterate who did extensive damage to native habitats in the Mid-West, damage that is being perpetuated today by Arbor Day enthusiasts who believe that planting any tree anywhere is always good. Morton’s battle cry was “Make war on the treeless prairie.” Finally, I thought there wasn’t a tree poem more nauseating that Joyce Kilmer’s sappy ditty. Now I have been proven wrong.
