Among the legions of anglers who have made the pilgrimage to the fly-fishing Mecca that is Yellowstone National Park, Craig Mathews' name is spoken with a reverence usually reserved for Nobel Prize winners and the Dalai Lama. No one knows those waters better than Craig, and no one has done more to make it accessible to the millions of anglers who visit each year. Craig's body of work includes several classic books that decipher the complex hatches of the West, dozens of revolutionary fly patterns, and what may turn out to be his most lasting contribution-the 1% for the Planet program. It is for these efforts that touch all the myriad aspects of fly-fishing that FR&R has named Craig Mathews as its 2005 Angler of the Year. Congratulations, Craig. It's also the time of year when we survey the fly-fishing landscape for those pieces of superior tackle and gear that deserve to be recognized with a FR&R Tackle Award. Selections for this year's Tackle Awards were made by a panel of angling experts that included Barry and Cathy Beck; Jason Borger; Buzz Bryson; Joe Humphreys; Brad Jackson; Steve Kantner; Rick Kustich; Ted Leeson; Darrel Martin; Will Rice; Rick Ruoff and Jack Sayers. They're some of the finest and most experienced anglers in the field, and we thank them for their efforts. Once again, we've also included a Readers' Choice Award, the winner of which was chosen by FR&R readers who voted on our Web site, www.flyrodreel.com.
