Jack Nicklaus--legendary golfer and avid angler--has joined the Federation of Fly Fishers as its national spokesperson. Nicklaus (above, at left), who retired from the professional golf tour in 2005, is a passionate angler whose fishing adventures have taken him across much of the globe.

"We are terribly excited about it," FFF CEO Peter Van Gytenbeek says. "He is kind of up in the Ted Williams category of being a very good fly-caster and being tremendously serious about it."

Van Gytenbeek says Nicklaus is a good choice to work with FFF because "he has a high visibility and his professional and sport ethics are above reproach. He loves our sport and is a very special person."

Besides being the national spokesperson for FFF, Nicklaus is also the honorary chairman of the FFF Presidents Club, as well as a member of the organization's board of directors. Although the extent to which Nicklaus will be directly involved with FFF has not been determined, Van Gytenbeek says, he will "set his own course."

In other FFF news, the International Game Fish Association named the organization its 2006 Conservationist of the Year. The award was given in recognition of FFF's mangrove restoration initiative.
