In this age of impersonal, monolithic Web sites from which you can order practically everything, it is nice to know that quirky, organic mail-order catalogs still have a place. The Book Mailer is one such publication.

Currently marking its 24th year in business, The Book Mailer is not your average catalog. Printed in black and white on newsprint, it eschews loud colors and photos in favor of informed content and irreverent commentary, which is exactly as The Book Mailer founder and angling legend, the late Gary LaFontaine, would have it.

The current owners of the catalog are Marcy Chovanak and Cathy Ransier who, according to Ransier, bought the company because "we didn't want to look for real jobs and this is what we know."

And what they know is how to put out a free mail-order catalog to tens of thousand of customers around the world. Besides fly-fishing books--of which Ransier claims to have the largest selection--The Book Mailer offers flies designed by LaFontaine, along with tying materials, DVD's and many other items. Of course, keeping in the tradition of LaFontaine, there is plenty of humor scattered throughout the catalog.
