The Essence of Splake

In a recent post on his blog (part of which appears below) Bob Mallard, the wild salmonid activist who runs Kennebec River Outfitters in Madison, Maine, captured the essence of splake (a Frankenstein fish concocted by crossing lake trout and brook trout, doubtless in bell towers, under green, flashing lights and with the assistance of cackling hunchbacks).  I’m told that posters on the “grool channel” (an anti-environmental, anti-flyfishing, radical-property-rights website peopled by alleged “sportsmen”) debated long and hard about whether this monstrosity was a “brook trout.”  I was emailed a photo of it, and it resembles a brook trout in that it has fins.  Apart from that it looks as much like a brook trout as a codfish.  Herewith, Mallard’s post:

“I laughed my a$$ off when I heard our good friend caught a record splake.  What the **** is a record splake?  It is a made-up fish -- an abomination!  Do we have hunting records for wolf/dog hybrids?  This will now validate the Department of Inland Fish and Game’s insane, wasteful and embarrassing splake program in their minds.  Bet it gets on the cover of the Northwoods Sporting Journal.  Splake suck, and no angler worth his waders would ever target them...”
